The event was graced by distinguished personalities, including the Chief Host, Professor Owunari Abraham Georgewill, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt. Professor Georgewill eloquently highlighted the indispensable nature of communication and telecommunications in Nigeria's contemporary economy. He emphasized the urgency for society to embrace digital innovation as a catalyst for sustainable development, underscoring the critical role played by CITE in advancing telecommunications research and digital initiatives. Professor Bourdillon Omijeh, the Director of CITE, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the imperative of technological advancement in driving innovation for sustainable development. He stressed the need to equip the youth with digital skills and advocated for collaborative efforts between academia, industry, and government to foster innovation. Professor Omijeh expressed gratitude to stakeholders for their unwavering support, including the Vice Chancellor, Professor Georgewill, and key organizations such as the National Communication Commission (NCC), National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), NIEEE, ThinkCyber, MTN, COREN, ATC, Ericsson and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Throughout the commemoration of WTISD 2024, enlightening lectures illuminated the path towards digital transformation and sustainable development: 1. Dr. Sanuel Gambo, the South-South Coordinator of NITDA, delved into the role of digital technologies in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nigeria. 2. The NCC shed light on digital transformation in Nigeria's ICT sector, exploring both opportunities and challenges. 3. Ericsson captivated the audience with insights on revolutionizing industrial connectivity through the power of 5G technology. 4. MTN elucidated on leveraging AI for environmental sustainability in Nigerian telecommunications. 5. Professor Bourdillon Omijeh shared perspectives on digital innovation for sustainable development, emphasizing the institutional role of CITE. 6. ThinkCyber addressed security threats in mobile communications, discussing current strategies and the future promise of AI. 7. The Nigerian Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (NIEEE) highlighted the critical roles of ICT in attaining the SDGs. Beyond lectures, the event featured awards and goodwill messages, reinforcing the commitment of stakeholders to collaborate in achieving digital innovation for sustainable development.
